Alcoholism Addiction Treatment Success Rates
Alcoholism addiction treatment success rates are the subject of this Infographic created by Patrick Meninga, founder of Spiritual River.com. Patrick is an Intake Specialist at a Drug Rehab in Michigan and has over 5 years of experience working directly with recovering addicts and alcoholics. He has been clean and sober for over a decade now and has also conquered nicotine addiction as well. In addition to full time work in a treatment center, Patrick actively writes on the web about addiction and has contributed over one million words to try and help others to find a path of recovery.
As you’ll see in his Infographic, relapse is a part of the disease of addiction, whether the addiction is to drugs or alcohol. There are many reasons for this which are explained in NIDA’s piece, “Drugs, Brains, and Behaviors: the Science of Addiction > Treatment and Recovery.” But, as Patrick shares, “Treatment works, even if it doesn’t work perfectly.”
To help those looking for treatment and/or someone looking for treatment on behalf of a loved one or friend, please know there are 23 million Americans living their lives in recovery. It’s critical we get the message out there that there is no one, nor right way to “do” addiction treatment (check out, “Do You Have to Call Yourself an Alcoholic“), but regardless of how a person chooses to do it, recovery is real. That’s kind of a deceptive infographic from Patrick Meninga. Where do those stats he cites come from? There’s no reference provided, and I’m pretty sure some of them won’t hold under scrutiny. 10% of all adults need alcohol treatment? I don’t think so. 94% of rehab facilities offer 12 step treatment? Once again, where’s the source? And while many offer 12 Step, that’s often not the only method used (CBT, Motivational, etc). I’m also reasonably sure that his claim that 2/3 of people who enter rehab have been before is inaccurate — maybe if you include all forms of treatment, but not inpatient rehab. Then we’ve got the claim that most people who find stable recovery do so after 3-4 visits to rehab — most people in recovery didn’t go to a rehab at all.
Anyway, I thought we were supposed to strive to present accurate information, not misleading stuff…

Lisa where is the science to back up the info graphic? Where are the outcomes and over what period of time has this data been gathered.i am concerned that the info gram is full of info but where’s the beef? Did the Butler Research Center at Hazelden participate? We look to you to be excellent.

@ Scott and David – Lisa is correct. All of the data presented here came directly from the government website as cited in the original post. That said, I read that data and created this graphic a few years back. But it is all data from U.S. Government.
