I had the opportunity to hear Lisa’s presentation on Second Hand Drinking (SHD) at the 2013 National Police Athletic League Conference. The concept of SHD was new to me, and her research educated and moved me personally. I had no idea about secondhand drinking and the part about how toxic stress harms a person’s brain and physical health. It really made me think about how my drinking has hurt my family. The part about how a person can change how much they drink is really helpful.

Just reading through some of the website and I have to share with you that a huge weight has been lifted from my heart (or brain?). …My daughter is on day one of a 28 day rehab for opiate addiction. Ordered your book about “being in treatment, now what.” Had wondered what would happen after 28 days. She has too. Also, it had never entered my mind about healing our family or that we even needed it. My mother, sisters and I have been involved with raising her young daughter (almost 2 years old), worrying about my daughter, worrying about my granddaughter’s future – it really has impacted the family. We’ll be working on that. But sitting here at my desk, I feel… for the first time in over a year … hopeful.
